Foreign interference, rising polarization and threats to our sovereignty have shaken the foundation of civic life in Canada. This era demands a renewed and strategic commitment to securing a resilient democratic culture in our country. The urgency of this moment is what grounds the Samara Centre for Democracy’s recent submission to the Standing Committee on Finance, which links democratic renewal to government priorities of security, unity, and prosperity.
Our top recommendation is the creation of a Canadian Democracy Endowment to serve as a permanent, non-partisan, arm’s-length funding mechanism. Its purpose would be to support democratic infrastructure, civic capacity-building, and civil society organizations whose contributions foster social cohesion, enhance public trust, and bolster civic participation.
We encourage members of our community to endorse the creation of a Canadian Democracy Endowment and sincerely thank Apathy is Boring for mobilizing a national coalition around this proposal.
