Co-presented by the Samara Centre for Democracy and the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, From Peer Review to the Public: Re-imagining Academia for Civic Life is a timely conversation that explores how the humanities and social sciences shape our understanding of civic life, power and participation.

At their best, these disciplines help people think critically, engage meaningfully, and act with purpose in a democratic society. History, Sociology, Political Science, these aren’t just academic disciplines - they provide tools for building informed, active citizens.

But at a moment of democratic backsliding, universities are being challenged, even threatened. Academic freedom, something that was once protected and valued, is now regarded by some as elitist snobbery. How can scholars from the humanities and social sciences respond at this moment? What is their role in strengthening Canada’s democracy? How can they support civic life alongside the public, community organizations and others outside of academia?

We’ll unpack these questions - and more - as we explore what’s working, why it matters, and how these models can be scaled-up to truly democratize knowledge and participation.

This live webinar features moderator Nana aba Duncan (Associate Professor and Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion at Carleton University and co-founder of Media Girlfriends), and panelists Dr. Debra Thompson (Associate Professor of Political Science and Canada Research Chair in Racial Inequality in Democratic Societies at McGill University, and Board member at the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Samara Centre for Democracy) and Dr. Beatrice Wayne (Director of Research and Policy at the Samara Centre for Democracy and one of the founders of the Student Vote Research Network). Introductory remarks will be made by Sabreena Delhon (CEO of the Samara Centre for Democracy).
